The displayed treasures, consisting of silver ornaments for women, constitute some of the best and most intriguing examples of medieval jewellery found on the Polish territory, in the area of of former Cherven Cities.
They include two treasures from Perespa dating back to the 10th-11th century as well as a treasure from Czermno from the 12th- 13th century. The older finds – from Perespa – have their equivalents both in Eastern Europe (areas of the newly-formed Kievan Rus) and in the territories of Hungary, the Czech Republic as well as Małopolska (Little Poland) and Wielkopolska (Great Poland) districts. Ornaments from both treasures perfectly illustrate the attempts of social elites of the Cherven Cities region to establish contacts with both the East (the Rurik monarchy) and the West (the Arpad, Piast and Přemyslid monarchies). They can also be considered as proof of the functioning of the famous trade route connecting Kiev with Regensburg – merchants travelling west from Russia also stopped in Czermno (Czerwień) before they reached Krakow or Prague.
Ornaments from the treasure of Czermno, discovered on the ramparts and dated to the 12th-13th century are of unequivocally Ruthenian nature. At that time, the region of Cherven Cities constituted the western periphery of Ruthenia.
The exhibits displayed at the exhibition are characterized by a high level of goldsmith's art – a beautiful testimony of artistic culture of the centres which formed the system of the historic Cherven Cities.
The exhibition refers to the first display of finds from the settlement in Czermno, which took place at the National Museum in Krakow in 2013. The wealth and variety of the accumulated material works testified to the intense relationships of Cherven Cities with eastern and western art centers. This time we are presenting the treasures excavated in the years 2014-2015, cleaned and preserved in Krakow conservation workshops and displayed in our city for the first time.
